Chapter 31 Summary: “Briana”

The door has expanded due to recent rains, so they have to wait until the swelling reduces to get the door open. This means Briana will have to spend the night with Jacob. Briana panics because the bed is small, and she is afraid she will give in to her desire to be intimate with Jacob. To distract Briana, Jacob offers to answer more questions about himself, but Briana isn’t interested. Jacob asks her to ask him hard questions, and she insists he’s not ready. When he insists, Briana asks to see his search history, and he immediately hands over his phone. Not only this, but he also gives her the passcode, even changing it to make it easier for her to remember. Briana is shocked because Nick would never have done this. Briana is further surprised to discover that Jacob’s search history shows exactly what he said would be there. Briana realizes that she’s in love with Jacob.

Chapter 32 Summary: “Jacob”

Jacob offers to open a bottle of bourbon he brought for Daniel and Alexis before he saw that Alexis is pregnant. They play a drinking game, and Briana quickly becomes drunk. Briana confesses that when she left Nick at the end of their marriage, she filled their house with five gallons of glitter, even placing glitter on the top of fan blades. She also took lightbulbs from the refrigerator, the plate from the microwave, and various other things. She feels bad because Nick had to replace the carpet to get rid of the glitter. Jacob confesses that he sat in the rain the first time they talked on the phone. Jacob realizes he’s in love with Briana. At the same time, Briana confesses that she loves him, but Jacob believes it’s just a drunken declaration that she won’t mean when she’s sober.

Chapter 33 Summary: “Briana”

Briana wakes up beside Jacob, not sure how she got there. The door is open, so she grabs her things and leaves. When Briana gets home, she finds that her mother, Rosa, has come to town unexpectedly early for Benny’s surgery. Benny and Briana argue over whose fault this is and who will suffer the most under their mother’s need to cook and clean obsessively. Later, when Briana calls Jacob, he asks to meet Rosa and agrees to tell both her mother and Benny that he is Benny’s kidney donor. Jacob again urges her to move in because Jill stopped by unexpectedly and noticed Briana wasn’t there. Briana agrees to figure something out. They linger on the phone, neither willing to hang up first.

The next day, Briana tells Rosa and Benny that Jacob is Benny’s donor and that she’s moving in with him. Benny questions Briana, wondering if she’s only dating Jacob because of the kidney. Briana insists that she loves Jacob but admits she would do anything to get Benny his kidney.

Chapter 34 Summary: “Jacob”

Briana arrives at Jacob’s home without warning and with all her belongings in tow. Jacob is ready to invite Briana into all aspects of his life but is disappointed to learn that she brought an air mattress and plans to sleep in the living room. Briana blows up the air mattress, and someone knocks on the door. Briana struggles to hide the mattress with no help from Jacob. When Jacob lets Jewel inside, she finds a mess in the hallway, which Briana explains as remnants of their passion.

Over the next few weeks, Briana and Jacob establish a routine and enjoy days off at his cabin. Jacob sends Briana flowers at work, causing Zander to question how fake their relationship still is. Jacob begins to feel threatened when one of the nurses tells him a patient is asking for Briana’s number.

Chapter 35 Summary: “Briana”

A childhood friend of Briana’s, Levi, is a patient in the emergency room. Briana is excited to see him. He says that he has recently gotten divorced and come back home to start a relationship with his former next-door neighbor. They exchange phone numbers to catch up. Jacob comes into the room, and Briana introduces him as a friend. Levi, however, guesses the truth.

Chapter 36 Summary: “Jacob”

Jacob is annoyed that Briana introduced him as her friend and stews on it all day. That night is the dinner with their families. Jacob is jealous when Briana gets a text that he believes is from Levi. This jealousy deepens when Briana suggests she tell Levi the truth about their fake relationship.

Chapter 37 Summary: “Briana”

Briana drives Rosa and Benny home, answering questions about Jacob’s family. Benny questions why Jacob never kisses Briana, and her mother tells her to commit to Jacob quickly. Briana announces that she has no intention of ever getting married again, but her mother argues that just because her first marriage ended badly, that doesn’t mean her second will. Briana tells them Levi is in town and she might have drinks with him. Her mother warns her that Jacob will be jealous, but Briana doesn’t believe her.

Chapter 38 Summary: “Jacob”

When Briana gets back to Jacob’s, they get ready for bed and lie in Jacob’s bed to watch television. Briana expresses concern over Jacob attending Jeremiah’s bachelor party the following night. Briana receives a text and tells Jacob it’s from Levi. Jacob asks if they ever dated, and Briana says his family wouldn’t have approved because Rosa was their housekeeper. Briana tells him that Levi invited her out for drinks and that she thought she’d go on a day when Jacob would be busy. When Briana’s phone keeps pinging, Jacob suggests she go to bed. Jacob has trouble sleeping. The next day, they prepare for the bachelor/bachelorette parties together, and Briana is on her phone all the way to his parents’ house. Briana notices Jacob’s increasing anxiety and suggests he leave, but he insists he’s fine. The moment they enter the house, Amy announces that she’s pregnant. Jacob flees the room.

Chapter 39 Summary: “Briana”

Briana follows Jacob into his parents’ basement and finds him having a panic attack. Briana crawls into Jacob’s lap to try to calm him, telling him over and over that she loves him. Then she begins using a grounding exercise to get him to focus on things he can hear, feel, and taste. Briana begins to cry, too, convinced he’s upset over Amy. Jacob kisses her, and they become intimate. Afterward, Jewel comes into the basement to tell them the limo has arrived for the guys. When Jewel leaves, Briana has a change of heart. She says that they’ve made a mistake and she doesn’t want Jacob to touch her again. She locks herself in the bathroom.

Chapter 40 Summary: “Jacob”

Jacob is confused by Briana’s behavior: First, she said she loves him, and now she’s pushing him away. He leaves his keys for Briana and walks home. He decides to write in his journal while he waits for Briana to return.

Chapters 31-40 Analysis

The use of symbolism in these chapters helps to further develop the relationship between Jacob and Briana. The door that won’t open is symbolic of the barriers between Briana and Jacob, barriers that are both self-imposed and the product of misunderstandings. Similarly, being confined in a small room symbolizes Briana’s inner turmoil: She is attracted to Jacob and wants to be intimate with him, but her past traumas and mistaken beliefs stop her.

The story of Briana using glitter to sabotage the marital home becomes a metaphor for the way she goes about her life. While the story itself is seen as a joke, widely talked about at work, it is just a way for Briana to cover the deeper trauma that caused her to want to hurt Nick. She acts as though she’s okay, but inside, she’s traumatized by her husband’s betrayal. Not only this, but her husband’s betrayal has also stirred the trauma that never healed from her father’s abandonment. Another symbol that appears in this group of chapters is the air mattress that Briana brings to sleep on at Jacob’s. The mattress continues to represent the barriers between them, and it becomes a comical obstacle to their relationship when Briana brags that she can easily hide it but then makes a mess in doing so.

Previously, the novel kept Briana and Jacob apart by playing on Briana’s fear of being with a man who is in love with someone else. In these chapters, Jimenez flips the script by causing Jacob to misunderstand a reunion between Briana and an old childhood friend. Like Briana, Jacob jumps to conclusions and makes assumptions that are not accurate. This is similar to Briana’s assumption that Jacob’s panic attack is brought on by Amy’s pregnancy announcement. However, the result is different because Jacob’s response is exaggerated by his anxiety, showing how Anxiety Within Relationships alters interactions for couples like Briana and Jacob. The fact that they become intimate for the first time after Jacob’s panic attack only further confuses their feelings for one another.

Jimenez creates a lot of parallels within the plot, especially with Jacob and Briana’s families. While they come from different backgrounds, Jacob’s and Briana’s relationships with their mothers are similar. They both are encouraged by their mother to pursue a relationship, but in different ways. Joy, despite her outgoing and often outrageous behavior, is respectful of Jacob’s feelings and only offers helpful advice when he asks for it. Briana’s mother is a little pushier, suggesting Briana marry Jacob immediately even as Benny is offering a voice of caution as he questions Briana’s relationship with Jacob based on warning signs he sees, such as Jacob’s reluctance to kiss Briana. Both women only want what’s best for their children, and their love for their children clearly shows where each got their compassionate side, as well as their clear desire to be a caretaker, as seen in their chosen profession as doctors.
