Though Rishi loves comics, he repeatedly insists that his drawings are only a hobby. Nevertheless, his talent and passion for comics are apparent very early in the novel. He even says that drawing is the only time he’s ever really felt like himself. Rishi has been drawing the story of his original comic book character, Aditya the sun god/superhero, since he was 15, and he dresses up as Aditya for Little Comic Con. When Dimple looks at story lines that Rishi drew before they met and sees that Aditya is beginning to “fall in love with a girl with wild, curly black hair,” she interprets it as another sign of kismet.
Rishi’s passion for drawing is partly what enables him to form a strong connection with Dimple. Dimple recognizes her own passion for coding in Rishi’s artistry. When she watches Rishi draw at the sketch-off, she feels more intimately connected to him, as though his art is an extension of his soul. When Rishi draws Dimple with 25 different expressions, Dimple notices that in each drawing “she found the basic essence of herself” (228). Rishi’s drawings not only allow him to see Dimple fully, but they also allow her to see him fully. A large part of Rishi’s growth occurs when he decides to give himself over to comic book drawing even though it might seem untraditional or impractical.
Set in San Francisco at the web development conference Insomnia Con, When Dimple Met Rishi takes place against a tech industry backdrop. Dimple is a passionate coder with big career ambitions. Through her interest in tech and coding, Dimple metaphorically rejects her parents’ traditional Indian customs and embraces the modern world. Dimple’s participation in the areas of STEM is one way that she stands out and feels like an outsider. Most Insomnia Con participants are male, and many of them are white. Her love of tech also is a primary complication in Dimple’s relationship with her mother, as Dimple believes Mamma wants her to be interested in more stereotypically female pursuits such as clothes and makeup. Nevertheless, her parents, especially her father, support her talent.
Dimple’s app demonstrates her love for her father and her family. She wants to build the app to help her father manage his diabetes. Developing the app is also the context in which Dimple and Rishi form a relationship and realize they are a good fit: Rishi’s artwork beautifully complements Dimple’s technological expertise.
Selecting a dance from a Bollywood film for the talent contest allows Dimple and Rishi to celebrate their cultural heritage in a playfully charming way. Practicing their dance is another way that they grow closer. Dancing onstage pushes both Dimple and Rishi outside their comfort zones, and their mutual working-through of their discomfort gives them another bond. In dance practice they spend lots of time in physical contact, and their practices often end in moments of sexual tension when they collapse in a sweaty heap. Their dance practices also surprisingly strengthen Rishi’s relationship with Ashish when Rishi witnesses his brother’s selflessness and generous support.
