Chapter 38 Summary

Content Warning: This section summarizes and analyzes physical abuse.

Emily shares several tumultuous weeks with Adam, during which they argue and have sex frequently. Adam becomes more controlling, telling Emily what she can and cannot wear. On one occasion, he physically blocks the door to their bedroom, demanding Emily change before going out with Seb and Pippa. He describes her dress as “disrespectful.” Emily refuses, and Adam engages in forceful, though consensual, sex with Emily.

Pammie tells Adam that her doctors have paused her chemotherapy treatments after declaring improvement. Adam makes dinner plans with Pammie to deliver the news of Emily’s pregnancy in person. James and his new girlfriend will also attend. Emily feels sick at the thought of seeing Pammie and James. She acknowledges how Pammie could tell Adam about her meetings with James, stealing away the father of her unborn child at any moment.

Chapter 39 Summary

Kate, James’s new girlfriend, affectionately introduces herself to Emily and Adam. Emily can’t help but feel jealous of Kate’s beauty and slender build. She pities Kate, assuming Pammie will treat her as poorly as she treats Emily. When Adam and Emily break the news of Emily’s pregnancy, Emily notices Pammie looks fearful.

James and Kate announce their engagement, and Pammie seems genuinely happy with this development.
