Part 5Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 5: “August”

Part 5, Chapter 24 Summary: “Leon”

After breaking up with Kay, Leon is sad, but Richie reminds him that he hadn’t really been in love with her for months anyway. He was just used to having her around. Now that he is not spending weekends with Kay, Leon needs to find other places to go because the flat is Tiffy’s on weekends.

He visits several more Johnny Whites on weekends and books an Airbnb to visit Richie, but the visit is canceled, so Leon calls his mother and asks if he can visit her instead. He does not visit very often, and she is happy to have him. He asks if anyone else is living with her because the men she usually has around are a big reason he has avoided visiting. She tells him that she has been on her own for a few months and is doing well.

Leon tells her that he and Kay broke up, and she asks why Kay ended it. He tells her that he ended it because she didn’t believe that Richie is innocent. She tells him that he can stay as long as he wants.

Part 5, Chapter 25 Summary: “Tiffy”

Tiffy is still with the Norwegian woodworker, Ken, at his book launch party. After she goes cold while they are kissing, he asks her if she is ok.

Justin appears out of nowhere. Tiffy tells Ken that he is her ex, and Justin tries to get Tiffy to come have a drink with him so they can talk. Ken leaves them alone, and Justin tells her that he is no longer with Patricia, the woman he left Tiffy for, and that he is still crazy about Tiffy. Tiffy refuses to go anywhere with him and says that she will need a few months before she is ready to talk to him. Justin continues to harass her, but Tiffy pushes him away and goes back into the party.

Part 5, Chapter 26 Summary: “Leon”

Leon checks on Holly one last time before she is discharged. Her hair is growing back, and she is gaining weight and doing much better. Her mother tells Leon he should come over for dinner sometime.

He leaves work and feels sad but isn’t sure why. He walks around London and sees the store that Richie was accused of robbing and hopes that they will hear good news from Gerty soon.

When Leon arrives at the flat, he notices that Tiffy hasn’t double-locked the door, which is unusual. He decides that it doesn’t look like the house had been robbed and gets in the shower.

Part 5, Chapter 27 Summary: “Tiffy”

The morning after Tiffy sees Justin at the book party, she wakes up with the worst hangover she’s ever had. She’s still wearing her dress from the party and is an hour late for work. She goes to the bathroom, wearing just her underwear, to take a shower.

As she opens the bathroom door, she realizes that Leon is in the shower already. He moves the curtain aside to see who is there. They see each other, panic, and do their best to cover themselves up. They awkwardly apologize and swear that they didn’t really see anything. Leon quickly gets out of the shower to let Tiffy use it. They both have a hard time recovering from this encounter, especially the strong attraction they feel toward each other.

Part 5, Chapter 28 Summary: “Leon”

Leon is in his room after the shower incident, trying to recover from the shock of seeing Tiffy for the first time in her underwear. He thought Kay had said she was unattractive and was not prepared for the attraction he felt when he saw her.

The phone rings, and Leon sneaks out to answer it while Tiffy is still showering, knowing that it is Richie

He tells Richie what happened and realizes he needs to get dressed and out of the bedroom before Tiffy finishes showering and needs the room to change. He goes to the kitchen after dressing and waits until Tiffy goes from the bathroom to the bedroom to talk to Richie again.

Richie thinks the whole situation is hilarious, but Leon is embarrassed and worried it made Tiffy uncomfortable. Richie reassures him.

Part 5, Chapter 29 Summary: “Tiffy”

Tiffy fills Rachel in about the series of events from last night’s party to this morning’s shower. Rachel tells her that she needs a plan for how she will deal with Ken, Justin, and Leon. Tiffy thinks that first she should reach out to Leon to clear the air or else things will only become more awkward between them.

She calls Mo to talk about the Justin incident. Gerty is there, too. They applaud her for sending him away but are concerned that he has now shown up to places where Tiffy is twice in the last couple months. Tiffy asks Gerty if she can talk to Mo alone for a bit and tells him that when she kissed Ken, she had a strange flashback sensation that caused her to freeze. He tells her that this is a natural response to recovering from trauma and that she’s already come a long way.

After talking to Mo, Tiffy looks at Leon’s Facebook profile again, remembering that at first, she didn’t think he was that attractive, but now she does. Martin sneaks up behind her and asks who she’s looking at, and she says it’s just her friend Leon. He gives her an odd, smug look.

Part 5, Chapter 30 Summary: “Leon”

When Leon visits his mother that weekend, he is pleasantly surprised that she wants to take care of him rather than the other way around; she listens to him talk about his breakup, comforts him, and makes him food. He notices that she hasn’t changed her hair and clothes to please anyone else and she seems stronger and more independent without a man in her life.

That evening, Tiffy texts him and says they should probably talk about what happened that morning. She tells him it was her fault for breaking her end of the agreement by being in the flat so late in the morning. He tells her not to worry about it and that they can move past it. She asks if Kay was upset about it, and Leon admits he broke up with her.

She replies that she had been wondering if something was wrong on his end. They text a little more; Tiffy makes him laugh, but a little sexual tension from that morning lingers.

Part 5, Chapter 31 Summary: “Tiffy”

Tiffy gets a phone call from Gerty, who has taken Richie’s case and moved his appeal up by three months. Tiffy can’t wait to tell Leon, but on the way home, Leon texts her to warn her that a huge bouquet of flowers had arrived from Justin, and he thought that might not be a good surprise.

The bouquet came with a note reminding Tiffy that they’ll talk in October, and she reflects that she’s so much happier now that she hasn’t been talking to him. She thanks Leon for the warning and asks if she can call him with some good news.

She tells him that not only did Gerty take Richie’s case, but she also got the appeal moved from January to October, only two months away. Leon is stunned and a little apprehensive that the news is too good to be true, but Tiffy assures him that Gerty is an excellent lawyer and with her, Richie stands a chance of getting out. Leon thanks Tiffy and says he’s so glad she’s the one who took the flat.

Part 5, Chapter 32 Summary: “Leon”

Leon shares some of the Post-its passed between him and Tiffy. They make jokes about their neighbors and the family of foxes that live near them. Leon asks if Tiffy wants to stay now that her six-month lease is up, and she does; Leon tells her that now that he’s selling Mr. Prior’s scarves and Gerty is representing Richie for free, he doesn’t need the extra money anymore, but the flat wouldn’t be the same without her. He notices that she has gotten rid of a lot of things, and she says that she purged her room of anything related to Justin. He responds that he wasn’t too keen on him anymore, either.

Tiffy leaves a note asking if he got new boxers because she’s noticed the ones with cartoons have disappeared. He replies that he’d suddenly become aware that there was a woman living in his flat and had upgraded his wardrobe a little. He says he likes the dress she left hanging in their room; it looks like a dress for going on adventures.

Part 5 Analysis

After living together for six months, Tiffy and Leon finally see each other for the first time in a particularly vulnerable way, and their awareness of each other’s physical being changes their relationship. They both find themselves intensely attracted to each other when they didn’t expect to be, and they begin noticing more and more intimate details about each other’s presence in the flat—such as Tiffy noticing Leon’s new underwear—intensifying the theme of Building Trust and Intimacy Through Unconventional Means. Now that Leon is newly single and Tiffy is working on moving past her relationship with Justin, they both are more emotionally available to each other.

Justin remains an intrusive presence in Tiffy’s life, however. When Justin sends a large bouquet of flowers, Leon texts Tiffy to warn her: While he doesn’t yet realize the extent of Justin’s abuse, his warning signals his understanding that Justin is not a welcome presence. In this novel, flowers tend to signify grand gestures that aren’t necessarily sincere. Juxtaposed with Leon’s humble Post-it notes, the big, expensive bouquet might seem like the more romantic and desirable gift, but Leon’s notes—and this warning—demonstrate his capacity for thought and care, standing in contrast to the manipulation behind Justin’s gifts and gestures.

This section shows the two romantic leads drawing closer together in such a way that the people around them notice their closeness before they do. While they are not dating and will not admit to anyone that they like each other as more than friends, the people closest to them can tell that falling for each other is inevitable. This sense of anticipation and delayed gratification is a hallmark of the romantic comedy genre, propelling readers to finish the novel because they want the romantic leads to finally get together.
