Chapter 46 Summary

At first, Celestine breaks down, but she soon realizes that she is in the community gardens not far from her home. She breaks out through a window and starts running. On her way back, she stops at the spot that was her and Art’s usual meeting place. She finds him there with Juniper.

Chapter 48 Summary

That night, Celestine is woken up by a call from Pia. The journalist wants to know who else was there on her Branding Day, as all information has been wiped from the official records. Celestine does not fully trust her, and bargains for information about Carrick. Pia accepts, so Celestine tells her that Mr. Berry was there and recorded the proceedings on his phone.

Chapter 49 Summary

The next day, Pia comes for her final interview. She is on edge, having shed her perfect journalist persona. Celestine tells her about the previous day’s ambush and warns her that the teenagers photographed her sixth brand. In return, Pia tells her about other cases before hers that may prove Judge Crevan’s corruption. She explains that Celestine’s case has brought public attention to the Flawed cause as a human rights issue. Pia shows her articles about reforming the system that paints the young girl as a symbol of hope. One journalist especially, Lisa Life, has penned several articles in support of Celestine.

Chapter 50 Summary

Pia explains that she has been unable to find Mr. Berry or any of the guards. She adds that Celestine’s story has helped her “find [her] own voice” (247), and the young girl realizes that Pia is Lisa Life. Before she leaves, the journalist gives Celestine a file with information about Carrick.

Chapter 51 Summary

Summer is trying on new, mismatched clothes, and Celestine is surprised by her mother’s uncharacteristic choices. Candy Crevan, Judge Crevan’s sister, will be moving into the Tinders’ old house. Summer cannot refuse an invitation to the housewarming despite her distrust of the Crevans, and has decided to silently protest by wearing outrageous clothes. Since she is a professional fashion model, she intends to convince everyone that her outfit is the new fad, so that the guests will copy her and make themselves look ridiculous.

Later, Celestine opens Carrick’s file only to learn that his full name is Carrick Vane and that he is “F.A.B.,” which she assumes means AWOL.

Chapter 52 Summary

Ms. Dockery, Celestine’s math teacher, starts homeschooling her. She explains that she will give the appearance of teaching Celestine a Guild-approved curriculum, then reveals a tattoo of an “F” on her stomach.

Chapter 53 Summary

Alpha, as Ms. Dockery asks Celestine to call her, is part of the movement that supports the Flawed. She tells Celestine that Enya Sleepwell is now their leader and can be trusted as long as she can use Celestine to further her cause. Alpha’s own husband is Flawed, which made it impossible for them to adopt children after they learned of her infertility. Now, Alpha fights to legalize Flawed At Birth child adoption, which is what the “F.A.B.” in Carrick’s file referred to.

Chapter 54 Summary

Flawed At Birth children are born to two Flawed parents, who are not allowed to keep them. They are raised in government facilities and brainwashed to purge the Flawed out of them. Seeking out their birth parents leads to them being branded. Having learned about Carrick’s background, Celestine feels an even stronger connection to him. Alpha assumes Celestine knows where he is, and invites them to attend a meeting with some members of the movement that night.

Chapter 55 Summary

Mary May lets Celestine know that her week of house arrest is suspended because the Guild determined the incriminating picture was indeed of Juniper. Celestine then calls Mr. Berry to inquire about the video recording. His husband answers and tells her that Mr. Berry went into hiding, but that she already has the video.

Chapter 56 Summary

Celestine is confused because she does not remember being given the video by Mr. Berry. Later, she calls her granddad and fills him in on the latest events, asking him to go to the meeting with her. They drive to Alpha’s place, which they find out is a luxurious mansion.

Lulu, Alpha’s assistant, takes them to a crowded room with a podium. People stare at Celestine when they recognize her. Flawed speakers are sharing their stories about being separated from their children. Alpha invites Celestine to the stage, and she reluctantly accepts despite not being sure what to say. Before she can speak, the Whistleblowers arrive.

Chapter 58 Summary

Alpha leads Celestine to hide in a hidden room because the young girl does not want to leave without her grandfather. She is upset that Alpha used her. Alpha is confused when Celestine tells her that advertising the meeting like she did was dangerous.

Chapter 59 Summary

Celestine meets Professor Bill Lambert, Alpha’s husband, who is also hiding. He is a little drunk, but friendly. He tells her that she is the only person who acts instead of talking, and that is why every side wants to use her to their advantage. He encourages her to live for herself rather than by anyone else’s rules. When he leaves through another door, Celestine notices a Whistleblower in the next room.

Chapter 60 Summary

She hands Celestine her card, telling the young girl to find her when she needs her help taking him down. Finally, Celestine runs.

Chapters 46-65 Analysis

In this final part of the novel, Celestine actively reclaims her Self-Agency and takes steps against Judge Crevan and the Guild. This sets up Ahern’s sequel, Perfect. After the climactic passage in the shed, Celestine “[begins] to think rationally” and finds a way to escape on her own (225). Her newfound confidence is illustrated by two parallel comments. After she is abducted, she says: “[T]hey have won, and I have lost” (211). However, when she arrives home before curfew, she exclaims: “I beat them all” (231). Celestine’s success comes after her darkest hour, and suggests that she is starting to rebuild her identity.

In contrast to her previous isolation, Celestine’s social connections become more meaningful and supportive. Alpha, for example, is a community leader, and Pia Wang is revealed as an ally to the Flawed cause. Celestine’s own family disavows Judge Crevan, with Summer staging a silent protest against beauty standards and Juniper deciding to help her sister run away. These characters all discover Self-Agency through Celestine, who inspires Pia to “find [her] own voice” and Juniper to “do the brave thing” (247, 316).

Celestine’s conversation with Bill, Alpha’s husband, prompts her to reflect on her power. Bill suggests she use mathematics to solve her problems, which helps Celestine reframe her passion for logic as an asset. He also points out that “Ignorance is bliss. Knowledge is often a responsibility nobody wants” (295). This introduces the idea that compliance in the face of injustice only serves to uphold the system. Significantly, he calls knowledge—like Celestine’s experience of the Flawed court and her awareness of the Guild’s corruption—a responsibility.

Celestine acts because she feels responsible for her community, as her interaction with the prejudiced police officer demonstrates. In a symbolic parallel, Celestine stops at the supermarket to buy medical supplies for her injured granddad, which echoes her desire to help Clayton Byrne on the bus. While helping Clayton brought about her downfall, Celestine’s interaction with the police officer leads to a rebellion. The two events offer a climactic parallel and highlight Celestine’s journey from a naive, rule-following young girl to a more mature protagonist. Her compassion, her most defining trait, prompts both events.

She mentions in Chapter 11 that her situation is “completely illogical” (47), which contrasts with her renewed confidence when facing the police officer. Celestine repeats the phrase from Chapter 1: “I am a girl of definitions, of logic, of black and white” (309). This signals that she has fully embraced her identity as a logical and compassionate person. In contrast to the beginning of the story, she has fully dismissed the logical fallacy of the Flawed system.

The end of the story also brings about Celestine’s reunion and reconciliation with different characters. First, she is briefly reunited with Carrick. Echoing earlier chapters, Celestine mentions that she “only ever really saw [him] through glass. There’s no glass now” (312). This further cements their aligned identities as Flawed. Celestine also mends her relationship with Juniper, who helps her run away from Judge Crevan, and the suspense around Juniper’s mysterious activities is resolved.

Summer North’s physical transformation parallels her rebellion against the Guild. Her defiance is cemented when she appears with half-shaved hair. Celestine remarks that it makes her look “like a warrior” (318), reinforcing Summer’s unconditional support of her. Finally, Celestine discovers an ally in Judge Sanchez, which sets up new plot points that are developed in Perfect. Judge Sanchez is revealed to be an ambivalent figure, as she initially tries to fight back against the Guild’s corruption by using Celestine. In the end, Judge Sanchez is the first character who willingly lets Celestine go free; the judge knows that Celestine can achieve more by herself than as a pawn, validating the young girl’s Self-Agency.
