Chapter 7 Summary

Kyle and BeeBee start heading for higher ground in case a tsunami follows the earthquake. Kyle has doubts about his decision to take BeeBee up the hill instead of staying by the beach, but he remembers that “Mom and Dad trusted [him]” and that he needs to take charge (73). As they walk, they notice that nobody else is going the same way they are. They hear cows mooing in the distance and after listening, Kyle and BeeBee realize that it is a recording of cows mooing, but they don’t know why.

An elderly man and woman and their dog run into Kyle and BeeBee on the road as they make their way inland and tell them that the mooing sound is the town’s tsunami warning. They learn that the tsunami is supposed to reach the beach at 5:30 that evening and that the locals don’t trust the tsunami warning because there have been many false alarms in the past (79). Kyle and BeeBee join the couple, Norm and Josie, and they all head uphill. Kyle worries about what happened to his parents since they were onboard a yacht when the earthquake hit.

Chapter 8 Summary

Kyle and BeeBee’s parents find out that there was an earthquake on shore and try to call the hotel but realize that they cannot contact the children because the power is out. They go to find the ship’s captain to ask to go back to shore. They learn that the hotel they were staying at caught fire and that there is a tsunami warning. The captain refuses to go back to shore, explaining that it is safer for the boat to be at sea during a tsunami, so the parents resolve to pray and wait it out. Daren’s parents also hear the news about the earthquake and cause a scene when they are told they are not returning to shore.

Back on shore, Daren thinks about how he will deny that “wimpy” Kyle saved him from the fire if anyone from school finds out and wonders if his parents know about the earthquake. A van passes, broadcasting with large megaphones that there is a tsunami warning for the area (89). Daren starts to have doubts about staying on the beach and thinks that he was “so sure that Kyle was foolish to run away” before (90). He discovers that tsunami warnings aren’t taken seriously in the area because nothing ever happens, and this makes Daren happy to prove Kyle wrong. As the time gets closer to 5:30pm, Daren feels brave and excited by his decision to stay among the people on the beach. However, three minutes before the wave is supposed to hit, someone yells that a killer wave is coming and to get far away from the beach immediately. A few people on the beach start to run away and Daren joins them, though they’re still laughed at by others who choose to stay behind.

Chapter 9 Summary

BeeBee and Kyle walk uphill with Norm and Josie and their dog Pansy. They reach the top of a hill and sit down at a bench that overlooks the ocean. They watch the firefighters and the people on the beach and wait for 5:30pm to come along. Josie and Norm offer for Kyle and his family to stay with them after they are reunited with their parents so that they have somewhere to sleep. At 5:30pm, Pansy the dog starts barking. Then they hear the “roaring noise like a dozen low-flying airplanes” and see the water “rising higher and higher as it [approaches] land” (100). Everyone below them is swept away by the wave that is taller than both hotels.

Kyle, BeeBee, Norm, Josie, and Pansy start hurrying further inland in case there is a bigger second wave on the way. They “[crash] through the underbrush like startled deer” and Kyle keeps thinking about the horrors he just witnessed (103). He and BeeBee worry about what happened to Daren and hope that he didn’t die in the tsunami. After a while, Josie declares that she can go no further, and she and Norm decide to stop because they are tired and elderly. They give Kyle a flashlight and encourage him and BeeBee to keep going to safety. They ran “not knowing what was ahead of [them] and not caring” until BeeBee stops out of exhaustion (106). It is dark outside, and they only have the flashlight Norm gave them. As they catch their breath, they hear branches snap and see two glowing eyes looking at them.

Chapters 7-9 Analysis

Chapter 8 marks a drastic change in the novel. The author writes Chapter 8 from the perspective of Kyle and BeeBee’s parents on the cruise ship and from the perspective of Daren on the beach. This change only happens in Chapter 8, which marks its significance to the plot. From the perspective of Kyle and BeeBee’s parents, the reader views the situation from the adult perspective and understands the emotional impacts of the news of the earthquake and impending tsunami. The reader is also informed about how remaining on a ship during a tsunami can be safer than being on shore (87). The viewpoint from Kyle and BeeBee’s parents increases the urgency of the plot while providing relief from the heavy events that the children just experienced. At the same time, a sense of anxiety is heightened as the parents must stay out in the water, separated from the children, and can only hope for the best. The narrative choice by the author to highlight the parents’ viewpoints reminds the reader that no one can predict the future and prevent natural disasters from occurring.

From the perspective of Daren, the reader gains a better understanding of his character. Daren has been characterized as rude and self-centered, especially because of the way he bullies Kyle and BeeBee. This characterization continues when the reader gets a glimpse into his perspective in Chapter 8. Daren’s internal monologue after he separates from Kyle and BeeBee serves to bolster his self-centered attitude as he hopes his parents feel bad for not taking him on the yacht. He believes that Kyle is wrong about the tsunami and this belief makes him happy, demonstrating his lack of maturity and the traits that serve as a foil to Kyle. Even when Daren is alone, his thoughts are negative, and he relishes in making others feel guilty and stupid. The remaining narrative is from Kyle’s perspective, but this moment in Daren’s mind truly shows how different the two boys are from each other. The Chapter 8 perspective shifts allow the reader to gain insight on the impact of the earthquake and tsunami on other characters.
