Chapter 8 Summary: “Enzo”

Enzo tries to drive the boat out of the way of the storm, but a wave capsizes Johanna, sending him and Sawyer into the ocean. Enzo tries to grab hold of Sawyer before the wave hits, but they are separated. After swirling in the water, Enzo loses consciousness, waking up on the beach with Sawyer. Enzo is glad Sawyer is alive, but he is also irritated by her presence. They notice a massive lighthouse nearby, and Sawyer says she saw a light on in the lighthouse moments ago. Enzo’s head is bleeding, but it does not look like a severe wound, and they walk to the lighthouse. Enzo notices how Sawyer’s feet are cut by the rocks, but he is glad she is suffering. Sawyer worries the lighthouse is haunted. She prays to the “bean gods” —named after canned beans, which often survive the apocalypse in fiction—that they die a quick death. In the lighthouse, Enzo notes recently used items, a fireplace, and a dirty dish in the sink.

An old man comes down from the lighthouse with a shotgun, demanding to know why Enzo and Sawyer are in his home. Enzo is rude, but Sawyer is kind, convincing the old man to help them. The old man is Sylvester, a retired lighthouse keeper. Sylvester makes Enzo and Sawyer some coffee, and Enzo asks about a radio. Sylvester explains that his radio is dead, and he gets shipments once each month. The last shipment was three days ago, meaning they are trapped on the island, Raven’s Isle, for almost a full month. Enzo is suspicious of Sylvester, but he asks him for a first aid kit to help Sawyer’s feet. Sylvester gets a kit, and Enzo cleans his wound before helping Sawyer, who struggles to dress her cuts. Enzo and Sawyer are tense, and Sylvester implies that they are lovers, prompting both to deny their feelings for each other.

Chapter 9 Summary: “Sawyer”

Sawyer thinks about how much she hates Enzo and how suspicious she is of Sylvester. Sylvester tells Enzo and Sawyer that there is only one spare bedroom in the lighthouse, so they will need to share it. Sylvester sets a bedtime for Enzo and Sawyer from 9:00 pm until 7:00 am when Sylvester makes breakfast, noting that he stays up late watching TV. Sawyer and Enzo are upset by this news, but Sawyer accepts, acknowledging that she and Enzo don’t have a choice. Sylvester locks them inside the bedroom and leaves.

Sawyer changes into spare clothes provided by Sylvester, remarking on how dirty the room and clothes are. Getting into the one bed, Sawyer argues with Enzo over who will need to sleep on the floor. Enzo berates Sawyer for being a thief and gets into bed beside her. In the middle of the night, Sawyer wakes up to Enzo having a nightmare. Outside the room, Sawyer can hear chains dragging on the ground, and she tries to wake Enzo. She holds Enzo’s hand, which appears to calm him down, and she thinks about being stranded in the water. Noting that 95% of the ocean is undiscovered, Sawyer recalls the mix of fear and desire she felt swimming toward Enzo, as well as the disappointment she felt when Enzo seemed upset she survived. Enzo wakes up, sees Sawyer crying, and tells her to be strong.

Chapter 10 Summary: “Enzo”

Enzo fights his conflicting feelings of hate and attraction for Sawyer. They are on the beach, and Sawyer is trying to figure out how to fish, making fun of Enzo for being a marine biologist who does not know how to catch fish. She leaves and returns with a knife, Sylvester’s cane, and duct tape, with which she fashions a spear. Enzo taunts her. Sawyer spears a fish, surprising him, but he takes the fish and tells her to catch more. Enzo grabs Sawyer’s face, expecting her to blush with arousal, but she pales, losing her pleasant demeanor and silently returning to the water. She returns later with three more fish.

While Enzo cleans and cooks the fish, Sylvester arrives, amazed at Sawyer’s fishing. Sawyer is now in only shorts and a bikini top, and Enzo sees Sylvester stare at her. Enzo asks about the sounds of chains from the night before, which he heard after Sawyer fell back to sleep, and Sylvester tells them about a storm in 1985. A ship carrying 80 prisoners crashed, and only four men made it to the island. Sylvester did not let them in the lighthouse, noting their violent crimes, but two of them broke in. Sylvester shot the two men, who died, while a third man died of an illness. The ship that brings Sylvester supplies picked up the third man, but the ghosts of the two men Sylvester shot still haunt the lighthouse. Sylvester tells them the ghosts are harmless, but Enzo does not trust Sylvester’s story.

Chapter 11 Summary: “Sawyer”

Enzo tells Sawyer he does not trust Sylvester, and Sawyer comments that Sylvester has not done anything strange other than giving them a bedtime. Enzo decides to search Sylvester’s room. Sawyer protests, but she follows him anyway. Sawyer finds some photos of Sylvester, a woman named Raven, a child named Trinity, and an unborn child named Kacey. One picture of Raven, nude and standing in the water, makes Sawyer uncomfortable, and she notices how Raven has a strained smile in her other pictures. Sawyer does not tell Enzo these details, simply noting that Sylvester had a family, which explains the children’s books in the lighthouse.

They hear Sylvester returning, and they hide in his closet. Sylvester enters the room, takes off his prosthetic leg, and gets into bed for a nap. Enzo and Sawyer struggle to stay quiet, and Enzo begins touching Sawyer sexually. Enzo uses one hand to reach into Sawyer’s shorts and another to block her nose and mouth. Sawyer panics, but she acknowledges the pleasure of being intimate with Enzo again, eventually having an orgasm. Afterward, Sawyer feels ashamed. Against Enzo’s protests, she leaves without waking Sylvester. Enzo follows behind her, and Sawyer thinks she needs to stop having sex with Enzo.

Chapter 12 Summary: “Sawyer”

Sawyer is tormented by Kevin and Enzo’s voices as she walks away from the lighthouse. Kevin calls her “pipsqueak” and tells her she can never be loved by anyone but him, while Enzo’s voice tells her how easy it is to break her. Sawyer eventually finds a cave. She runs back to the lighthouse, where she finds Sylvester cleaning his gun, already awake from his nap. Sawyer asks for a flashlight, and she takes it back to the cave. Inside, she finds a large open area covered in shining, black rocks with a small pool of water in the center.

That night, Sawyer lies awake in bed next to a restless Enzo, thinking about how beautiful the cave is and wondering how it can exist on the island. Enzo’s shifting upsets Sawyer, and she shoves him, prompting him to push her off the bed. Enzo immediately feels guilty and picks Sawyer up, but she fights him until he pins her wrists. Enzo calls Sawyer a thief and a liar, gyrating against her. Sawyer says she does not want to have sex with Enzo, and Enzo accuses her of seducing him in the closet to build sympathy. Suddenly, Enzo is distracted by something outside the window, and Sawyer turns to see a young girl in a white dress walking into the ocean. Sawyer bangs on the window, but she cannot get the girl’s attention. Sylvester enters angrily, demanding to know what is happening, but the girl is gone. Enzo says she might have been another ghost.

Chapter 13 Summary: “Enzo”

Enzo asks where Sawyer goes during the day, but Sawyer ignores him and leaves. Enzo notes that he dislikes Sylvester, and he spends his days repairing things around the lighthouse to stay busy. Sylvester comments about modern women being rude, and Enzo leaves to follow Sawyer. Circling the island, Enzo thinks he must have missed Sawyer, but he sees the cave and realizes it is where Sawyer has been hiding. He goes into the cave, worried that Sawyer might be hurt. Sawyer asks him why he followed her, and Enzo explains that the cave is illuminated by glowworms, who use bioluminescence to attract prey. Sawyer is mystified, but Enzo starts to insult her. Sawyer asks if Enzo is going to hurt her, and Enzo confirms, moving behind her and pressing against her back. Enzo says he will only have sex with Sawyer if she begs him, but Sawyer says she will not. Enzo forces her to touch herself, using her physical arousal as evidence of her interest in him. Enzo leaves, thinking Sawyer is ashamed of herself and planning to masturbate to the thought of Sawyer crying.

Chapter 14 Summary: “Sawyer”

Sawyer storms back to the lighthouse, where Sylvester invites her to sit on the couch with him. He puts his hand on her shoulder, and Sawyer thinks Sylvester has asked her to sit with him a few times recently, growing uncomfortable with him touching her. Enzo comes in and immediately questions why Sylvester is touching Sawyer, and the two try to stare each other down, with Sylvester claiming Sawyer does not have Enzo’s name printed on her. Sawyer gets up and goes to the spare bedroom, telling the men not to use her in their contests. Sylvester comes into the room later, and he apologizes for making Sawyer uncomfortable. Sylvester questions whether Enzo touches Sawyer, noting that Sawyer wears seductive clothing, but Sawyer points out that grown men should not have sex with women without their consent. Sylvester feels rejected, and he tells Sawyer that bedtime is 7:00 pm tonight. Enzo enters, staring at Sylvester, and Sylvester leaves, locking the door on his way out.

Enzo claims he is going to kill Sylvester. Sawyer finds Enzo ridiculous, thinking that men are useless and dangerous. Sawyer points out that Enzo has assaulted her, and Enzo tells her he intends to continue assaulting her. Enzo notes that he was raised by nuns, but he does not elaborate. The two argue, and Enzo grabs Sawyer by the hair, telling her he wants to make her suffer. After, Sawyer notes that she is good at ruining people’s lives.

Chapter 15 Summary: “Sawyer”

During the day, Sawyer moves around the spare bedroom tapping at the walls to see if there is a hollow portion they could use to escape. She read a book about Raven’s Isle, the lighthouse, and Sylvester the night before, though it did not mention the prisoners Sylvester told them about. Enzo demands to know what Sawyer is looking for, but Sawyer deflects. Enzo says he found her bookmark on a page about the lighthouse beacon, but Sawyer does not answer him. She thinks there might be a radio in the beacon room, or another way to communicate, but she wants to escape without Enzo.

Enzo presses against Sawyer, and she becomes aroused. He demands answers and reminds Sawyer that he will not have sex with her even if she begs. Sawyer begs him weakly, and Enzo ridicules her. They both freeze at the sound of chains directly above them. Enzo quietly says “Hello” to the sound, which makes it stop for a moment, but then the sound becomes a banging on the ceiling above them. Sawyer begins to panic, screaming and running out of the room. She almost falls, but Enzo catches her. Outside, Sylvester asks what is happening, and Sawyer tells Enzo to call the “water police” before fainting, thinking she is having a heart attack.

Chapters 8-15 Analysis

The suspense of the novel builds as Enzo and Sawyer find themselves trapped on Raven’s Isle. Sylvester’s reasoning has little logical basis; his claim that he likes to stay up watching television doesn’t necessitate Enzo and Sawyer being locked in their room. Sylvester’s unusual bedtime rules call attention to what he might be doing between 9:00 pm and 7:00 am. The sounds of chains in the night, which Sylvester dismisses as ghosts, contribute to two main possibilities: There are ghosts in the lighthouse, or Sylvester is holding someone captive. When Enzo and Sawyer first meet Sylvester, Enzo notes, “The old man looks at Sawyer, and I can visibly see his eyes softening” (89). For Enzo, this prompts a wave of jealous rage, but it also serves to imply that Sylvester has a specific interest in Sawyer. Later, Sawyer notices how Sylvester has “been asking [her] to sit next to him a lot these past few days,” dismissing Sylvester’s physical interest in Sawyer as “being friendly” (147). However, adding to the theme of Identity and Self-Discovery in Survival Situations, Kevin’s disembodied voice reminds Sawyer, “All men want you for one thing” (147), meaning sex. These details imply that Sylvester is sexually interested in Sawyer, and his attempts to control Enzo and Sawyer’s movements foreshadow the possibility that he will try to control Sawyer sexually.

Adding to the suspicions against Sylvester, Sawyer finds the book that details the events of Raven’s Isle, but there “is no record of the prisoners” (155). Sawyer acknowledges that this does not disprove Sylvester’s claim regarding the ghosts, but it adds suspicion to another element of Sylvester’s framing of Raven’s Isle. The fact that Sylvester locks Enzo and Sawyer’s door at night serves as evidence that Sylvester is willing to imprison others, lending credence to the possibility that Sylvester has captives living in the lighthouse currently. Additionally, Enzo and Sawyer cannot find a way to the third floor and beacon room of the lighthouse, which indicates that Sylvester has obscured various paths through the lighthouse to prevent people from finding whatever he might be hiding.

The Transformative Power of Love and Relationships begins to collide with The Complexities of Human Nature and Redemption as Enzo and Sawyer grow closer, despite their animosity toward one another. Sawyer summarizes their situation, saying, “Enzo and I stand in the eye of a hurricane, a perfect storm of lust and hate” (158). She hates his sexual aggression and reluctance to acknowledge her feelings, but these same traits also mix with her desire for punishment. Kevin’s voice tells Sawyer that no one will ever love her but him, saying, “No one can love a whore” (129). This again conflates Sawyer’s value as a romantic partner with her sexuality and her criminal past. Enzo may be Sawyer’s opportunity, as one of her victims, to achieve redemption through their relationship.

Enzo, on the other hand, clarifies his hatred for Sawyer as a matter of distrust. He trusted her by letting her into his home, then she betrayed him by stealing his identity. The discovery of the cave shows another such betrayal, as Enzo comments, “Something about her keeping that from me pisses me off. Then again, everything about her accomplishes that without even trying” (141). Here, Enzo also struggles to identify the reasons for his hatred beyond the betrayal. The cave is not something that belongs to Enzo, so Sawyer taking the cave for herself is not a direct conflict with Enzo. Instead, he feels that they are growing closer, and he laments that Sawyer did not trust him enough to share the cave with him. This implies a hidden element of Enzo that struggles with trust issues, something likely rooted in his past. This deeper vulnerability will encourage their relationship to grow.
