Sawyer and Enzo listen to intense, ghostly crying from the room above theirs. Sawyer asks Enzo if he believes in the afterlife, and he tells her he does not believe in the Christian ideology with which he was raised. Sawyer asks about his childhood, and Enzo tells her his father died before he was born in an accident at sea. He was a fisherman, and Enzo credits him with his love of the ocean. The nuns did not like Enzo because he was different and rebellious, but Sister Caterina helped him move to Australia when he turned 18, after which Enzo found happiness in college and his research. Enzo asks what made Sawyer happy as a child, and Sawyer says she and Kevin had a lot of fun before Kevin started abusing her. She adds that her parents’ death was a relief, as they were always disappointed that she could not measure up to Kevin’s perfection. Sawyer apologizes for ruining Enzo’s life, and Enzo suggests that they try to learn to move on from their trauma together. The crying above them stops, and Enzo laughs, saying Sawyer brought chaos into his life.
Sawyer and Enzo argue as they investigate a closet full of canned beans on the second floor of the lighthouse. They are looking for the path to the third floor to find the beacon, but there does not seem to be a way up from the second floor. Sawyer realizes that the entrance to the third floor might be on the first floor, skipping the second floor entirely. Enzo agrees, but he does not know how to get Sylvester to leave them alone while they investigate. Sawyer decides to stay with Sylvester while Enzo searches, noting that she knows how to handle creepy men, and Enzo says he will kill Sylvester if he touches her.
Sawyer is uncomfortable sitting with Sylvester, who keeps touching her leg. Sawyer comments on the chains, scratching, and crying sounds the ghosts make, but Sylvester assures her they will not bother her long. He extends a formal invitation for Sawyer to stay at the lighthouse, and Sawyer rejects it, saying she needs to sort out her life at home. Sylvester threatens to turn Sawyer in to the police, and Sawyer is shocked. Sylvester notes that Sawyer has probably engaged in theft and sex work, and Sawyer threatens to do something illegal to Sylvester. Sylvester gets angry, slaps Sawyer across the face, charges to his room, and emerges into the hallway with his shotgun. Enzo enters the hallway, and Sylvester points the gun at him, telling Sawyer to get in Sylvester’s bedroom. Sawyer says she will not, mouthing the word “cave” to Enzo. Enzo goes into the spare bedroom, and Sawyer sprints away faster than Sylvester can point the gun at her. She keeps running to the cave, hoping she can escape Sylvester.
Enzo walks down the stairway with Sylvester pointing the shotgun into his back. Moving quickly on the stairs, Enzo hears Sylvester stumble, and Enzo leaps over the stairway, grabs the gun, and points it back at Sylvester. Seeing a hidden staircase revealed in the floor of the first floor, Enzo shoves Sylvester down, closes the hidden staircase, and heads to the cave with a blanket and the gun. At the cave, he finds Sawyer and notices the bruising on her face from where Sylvester slapped her. They discuss how to kill Sylvester. Sawyer wants to sleep in the cave that night, and Enzo agrees.
Enzo brings Sawyer to the pool in the cave, and Sawyer is worried he wants to hurt her again like he did on the boat. Enzo says he wants to overwrite that bad memory with a good one, telling Sawyer that orgasming close to death is exhilarating, like swimming with sharks. Sawyer is confused, but Enzo explains that drowning her while they have sex will give her a more intense orgasm. Enzo begs Sawyer’s forgiveness during sex. While they have sex, Sawyer tells Enzo to tell her everything he feels, and he expresses his love for her in Italian. Sawyer says she will learn Italian one day to figure out what he said, and Enzo fantasizes about bringing Sawyer to Rome. He tells Sawyer that she will be his until she dies, and they will die together.
The next day, Enzo reports that Sylvester is missing. The hidden door to the staircase is busted open, and Sawyer notes that Sylvester has more guns than just the shotgun Enzo took from him. They decide to go back to the lighthouse to search for the beacon and Sylvester. Sawyer notes the kindness in Enzo’s voice, feeling unsure about how to respond to him. At the lighthouse, they do not hear anything, and they sweep the lighthouse without finding Sylvester. They do find massive stores of food Sylvester hid from them. Enzo gives Sawyer a knife to protect herself. They eat a light dinner, and Enzo realizes he needs to leave to get firewood from Sylvester’s storage behind the lighthouse. Alone, Sawyer hears knocking and dragging chains, which frightens her. Enzo returns and asks her what is wrong, and she tells him about the ghosts. Enzo says he will fight the ghosts if he needs to, and then boards up the lighthouse with wood.
Sawyer wakes up in the middle of the night to Enzo breathing heavily over her. They are in the spare bedroom with one piece of wood nailed across the door, and the ghosts are pounding on the door from the outside. Enzo and Sawyer lament their situation, as well as the tension it creates between them. Enzo wants to open the door, but Sawyer will not let him, curling into him instead.
The next day, Sawyer and Enzo are in bad moods; the ghosts kept them up all night, stopping as soon as the sun came up. Enzo removes the wood from the door, picks up the shotgun, and opens the door. Enzo and Sawyer snap at each other, but Sawyer hopes breakfast and coffee will help their moods. After breakfast, they begin searching for a way to the third floor by knocking on the walls.
Sawyer and Enzo fail to find a path to the third floor. Sawyer wishes she had more clothing, wearing only a few different t-shirts and her green bathing suit every day. She bumps into Enzo on her way to the bedroom, and he tells her to put clothes on, which upsets Sawyer. She puts on one of Sylvester’s clean shirts and goes downstairs, where Enzo is making food, but she is not sure she will be able to eat if Enzo is still cruel to her.
Downstairs, Enzo slides a bowl of food to Sawyer, which burns her, and she says she is not hungry. Enzo gets angry, grabbing Sawyer’s hair and telling her he loves her, but he hates himself for feeling that way. They have sex. Sawyer realizes Enzo is the first man she has had sex with who does not disgust her, and that she has sex with him for pleasure, not survival. After they have sex, the table collapses underneath them, and they laugh. Sawyer realizes she needs to tell Enzo about Kevin, but Enzo tells her that she stole both his identity and his heart, promising to give her whatever she needs for as long as they live. Sawyer is moved, but she tells Enzo she killed Kevin, explaining that she is running from the police—not Kevin—because Kevin was a police officer.
A flashback chapter depicts Kevin returning home from work and Sawyer sitting on her bed in her room. She analyzes his mood as he approaches. Kevin criticizes Sawyer for not cleaning the house, which he calls his own, even though they are supposed to split their parents’ possessions. Kevin takes the book Sawyer is reading, and he comments on her clothing. Sawyer picks her clothes carefully to avoid drawing Kevin’s attention, but he accuses her of trying to do so anyway. He tries to push her onto the bed, and Sawyer’s spirit leaves her body, watching from above. Kevin tells Sawyer not to fight, but she tells him she will kill him if he tries to assault her. Kevin starts strangling Sawyer, but she reaches for one of the knives she hid around the house, stabbing Kevin in the neck. Blood spurts over Sawyer, and she thinks she sees betrayal in Kevin’s eyes. Realizing the severity of the situation, Sawyer quickly leaves, knowing she will be a fugitive forever.
Sawyer expects Enzo to be upset or disgusted by her story, but Enzo says he only wishes he could have been there when she killed Kevin to praise her for it. Sawyer is moved by Enzo’s reaction, and he realizes Sawyer cannot stay in Australia, as they will extradite Sawyer to the United States to be prosecuted. Sawyer says she only came to Australia because someone recognized her at the airport. Enzo says he intends to protect Sawyer when they get off the island. They move upstairs but are interrupted by the sound of banging and chains on the first floor. Enzo leads the way back downstairs, pointing the gun in case they see the ghost, but no one is there on the first floor.
Sawyer spots a bookcase shifted at an angle, and they discover a staircase going upstairs behind it. Following the staircase, they find the beacon and a radio. As Sawyer fiddles with the radio, Enzo hears chains above them, drawing Sawyer behind him and pointing the gun at a ladder outside the beacon room. An emaciated young woman dressed in a dirty white dress comes down the ladder, and Enzo notices that her mouth is sewn shut with thick, black thread. Sawyer and Enzo are horrified. Enzo points the gun at the woman, but Sawyer approaches her carefully. Sawyer asks the woman if she is Sylvester’s daughter, Kacey, and the woman nods. She also confirms that Sylvester killed Raven. Enzo wonders if Kacey will help them or help Sylvester. A loud crack indicates that Sylvester is back, and Kacey, Sawyer, and Enzo panic.
Sawyer continues to struggle with her feelings for Enzo, remarking, “I don’t want to hurt him more than I already have and give him something I don’t know he can keep” (250), referring to her love. She is still unsure of herself, reflecting the theme of The Complexities of Human Nature and Redemption, as she wants to be with Enzo but knows that she might feel the urge to flee once again. In addition to Enzo’s confusing messages, Sawyer is confronting her internal perception of Kevin, who tells her, “When did you get so fragile, pipsqueak. You’re so easy to break” (299). He uses the same language Enzo used about Sawyer’s libido. Sawyer still sees herself as a sexual object that broke the rules of her confinement by killing Kevin and stealing identities, rather than as a woman who has overcome abuse and hardship.
Though Enzo is supportive through most of this chapter section, he retains his off-putting demeanor. This leads to Sawyer misunderstanding Enzo saying, “That’s not what I want to see” when asking her to put on clothes (300). She internalizes this, assuming he’s disgusted with her. Enzo explains himself, telling Sawyer that he actually wanted her to change “[b]ecause it pisses me off that I want you as badly as I do” (301), which reframes the discussion to include both Sawyer and Enzo’s troubled pasts. For Sawyer, Kevin broke down her sense of self-worth, leading her to think that she is only useful as a sex object and creating further feelings of guilt and shame after overcoming that abuse. However, for Enzo, his feelings for Sawyer are complicated by his fear of abandonment, resulting from his mother leaving him with the nuns. The scene in which Enzo and Sawyer have sex in the pool in the cave is a major turning point for the two of them, as they both express the earnest desire to forgive and love one another, but the misunderstanding afterward shows how The Transformative Power of Love and Relationships requires consistent effort and communication.
The flashback into Sawyer’s life six years prior reveals the details of her flight from the United States, exposing the moment when Sawyer fought back against her abusive brother and informing the novel’s portrayal of Identity and Self-Discovery in Survival Situations. When Kevin arrives home, Sawyer is “instantly on high alert” (314), and she notes how she dresses and acts in carefully calculated ways to try to avoid Kevin’s interest. Sawyer’s behavior results from the trauma and abuse she suffered as well as the internalized self-loathing she feels for her own body and actions. Sawyer notes how she “started hiding knives around the house, [her] subconscious understanding how deeply [she] was unraveling without ever fully acknowledging it” (317). This subconscious preparation to fight back highlights how long Kevin abused Sawyer, as well as how difficult it was for Sawyer to act against Kevin. Fleeing the house, Sawyer knows that she cannot explain why she killed Kevin, as no one will believe her.
The novel presents Kacey shortly after this flashback, connecting Kacey’s situation to Sawyer’s. Kacey’s mouth is sewn shut, and she is perpetually chained, highlighting the way Sawyer felt trapped with Kevin, unable to speak out about his abuse. As the novel races toward a climax, Sawyer and Enzo need to balance their own need to survive against the unknown threat Kacey presents. Much as Sawyer struggled to break free from Kevin, Kacey likely stands on the fence between staying with her father or fighting against him, and Enzo and Sawyer are not yet sure if they can rely on Kacey’s assistance.
