Book Club Questions

Dark Matter

1. General Impressions

Gather initial thoughts and broad opinions about the book.

  • The multiverse is becoming an increasingly popular subject in fiction and media. Do you have any favorite stories (books, films, television series) about alternate realities and the multiverse? How does this novel compare to them?
  • Do you consider Jason2 an antagonist? How would the novel change if it had unfolded from his perspective instead?
  • How would you describe Crouch’s style as a writer? Do you see evidence of his career as a screenwriter in his prose? Did you enjoy the novel’s style?

2. Personal Reflection and Connection

Encourage readers to connect the book’s themes and characters with their personal experiences.

  • Jason2 is driven by the need to obtain something missing from his life, which Jason has. Have you ever felt something was missing from your life? Would you trade places with a version of yourself that has what you want in exchange for the thing you value most in life? Why or why not?
  • The novel’s premise is built on the fundamental assumption that reality is a multiverse, where details differ from universe to universe. Do you believe in the concept of the multiverse? Why or why not?
  • How do you define identity? Is identity defined by who one is, what one does, or something more complex (as the book suggests)?
  • What would the concept of a multiverse imply about morality? Do our actions matter if another universe exists where we did not perform those same actions?

3. Societal and Cultural Context

Examine the book’s relevance to societal issues, historical events, or cultural themes.

  • The conflict between Jason and Jason2 represents the traditional dichotomy between home life and work life. What is the novel’s position on this dichotomy? Can one achieve balance between these aspects of life, or does the novel suggest that one will always be privileged over the other? In what ways has the divide between home life and work life changed in the contemporary era, and are those changes for the better?
  • How does the novel leverage real-life scientific concepts to build its fictional world? What does this say about the way art and science depend on each other to progress?

4. Literary Analysis

Dive into the book’s structure, characters, themes, and symbolism.

  • Daniela senses that something is wrong with Jason because of positive changes in his behavior. How do her perceptions contribute to the novel’s themes of identity? When Jason returns to Daniela, having gone through his character arc with Amanda, is he still the same Jason she loves?
  • Discuss how Jason2’s Box functions, first on a narrative level and then on a symbolic level. How do the speculative rules of the Box resonate with the emotional truths behind the novel?
  • Although the novel largely follows Jason’s story, three of the chapters are written from Daniela’s perspective. How does the novel distinguish between their narrative perspectives? Do these choices assert Jason and Daniela’s narrative roles, or do they expose inconsistencies in the novel’s structure?
  • Discuss the various alternate worlds that appear in this novel. Considering that the worlds most relevant to the narrative are the ones inhabited by Jason and Jason2, what do the other worlds contribute to the novel?
  • What is Ryan’s role in the narrative? How does he preempt the arrival of Jason2, and how does that role shift when Jason2 presents himself as Jason’s antagonist?

5. Creative Engagement

Encourage imaginative and creative connections to the book.

  • List up to five alternate career paths in your life. Choose one and discuss how the decision to follow this path would affect where you are at your present age. What would be the main differences between your present life and your alternate life?
  • Describe the world that you think Jason, Daniela, and Charlie end up in after the novel closes. What makes this world different from the world they’ve been inhabiting all of their lives thus far? Do you think the other Jasons will continue to pose a threat to their existence there?
